This is the 2006 Serra de’ Gatti Barbera d’Alba from Cascina Val del Prete.

We started buying barberi after our old favorite dolcetto (Bruno Giacosa) started getting expensive. I had always thought that the price order tended to be Dolcetto < Barbera < Barolo. And while that does hold pretty true, some good barberas are out there at a a good value.

This one was $17.99 and I believe we picked it up at the Wine House in West LA. If not there, then at 55° Wine in Atwater Village.

It has all the components of a nice barbera, a good nose, medium body, not too heavy, moderate fruit and a touch of pepper on the finish.

Highly recommend this with a roasted chicken, cheese & salumi or a mid-weight pasta dish such as orecchiette with chard and sausage.
