Mira! Another good rose

Currently ranked #2 for summer rosés at our house, Miraval, by celebrity winemakers Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie really is a good one. Nicely produced by Rhone powerhouse Chateau Beaucastel (who just happen to be partner-owners of California’s Tablas Creek), this wine delivers just what you’d expect: a sophisticated summer rose with plenty of flavor,…

Si, c’est bon

https://vine.co/v/MgETrtFVQzi/embed Here’s another excellent rose, although it’s not the stereotypical crisp, minerally yet fruity summer wine. It has a little more body and flavor than most. Since the label says it “was aged on lees and under a fine veil of flor for one year in 100-year-old foudres”, I was expecting it to be wilder…

Summer Friday Evenings

A nicely balanced, refreshing Oregonian rosé. It was good with a little late afternoon sunshine and even better with Pad Thai and a Thai spicy beef salad. Very low alcohol, so you need not be afraid when you notice the bottle is more than half gone. We’ll be having this again!

An AVA is a geographic description like Napa or Carneros or Champagne, for that matter. Vines have been a part of southern California since the Mission days. This vines here, apparently, aren’t…

Le Pic-Nic

By lunch today, we had left Auberge Veyret in Bardenat, seen the Saturday market in Sarlat-Le-Caneda (huge) to pick up some bread, cheese, sanglier (wild boar) sausage, some plastic cups and a cheap knife. We were lucky enough (great!) to be allowed to check in at the Hotel Pontet (just OK) in Beynac just off…

I’ll take your Bandol and this

Personal Wine Buyer just wrote about a pair of rosés. The Domaine Tempier is my all-time favorite, but it’s not inexpensive for a rose. Although I’m still working through a backlog of wine and food reviews that nobody is apparently going to write for me, life goes one.  So, some of the older favorites are…

Alternate pink sparkles

Picked this up at palate food + wine about a week ago, knowing we needed a bit of bubbly to go into a wild mushroom and truffle risotto. This is a nonvintage Allimant-Laugner Cremant’Alsace rose. G & I have a bottle of some sparkling wine or another on our month-iversary. Our usual favorite is…

Sipping Summer Sunset (mid-January)

2007 Ampelos Rose of Syrah Perfect on the balcony at sunset on a 78° Sunday afternoon in January. Thank you, Los Angeles. It’s a nice complement to charcuterie (serrano ham and a little finnocchiolino dried sausage).  Also went well paired to grilled salmon with a honey mustard cayenne glaze. I picked this out when I…
